"The big question for us: what is the main point we are missing?" we are missing incentives and disincentives built into the protocol stack. Only that way can we develop digital networked ecosystems that balance risk and are generative and sustainable. Today's networked ecosystems (including AI) are not sustainable. Humanity needs to build networks that resemble those found in nature.
Here's another thought: If a soothsayer divines a future that everyone fears and reacts to such that it doesn't occur, were they right? But the other thing to consider about what happened was the Breakup of AT&T into the competitive WAN and monopolistic access Baby Bells. That set the stage for commoditization of long-distance and built the foundation for the US head start on the internet by a decade: https://ivpcapital.com/blog/view/130/sex__bombs_and_burgers__the_internet_was_an_accident_of_two_wars
The concept of Network Effects (network externalities) didn't materialize formally until a 1974 WP from Jeff Rohlfs at Bell Labs on the market failure of the 1964 picturephone. I believe we still don't fully understand the science and maths behind networks. Arguably we've been at it since the 1840s with the advent of the telegraph. Shame on us! And humanity is paying dearly for that. https://infostack.substack.com/p/burn-it-all-down
Probably right Jono. The potential is there. Is it actually happening wholescale? Probably actually.

Feels like we probably have achieved centralised wiretapping?? On our symbiotic phone prosthesis
